All semi-colons do is suggest you've been to college.

Make sure, he added, that your reader is having a good time. We had a free conference at USC recently for Seeds of Simplicity, a voluntary simplicity movement group...people were lined up outside to get in. There’s a great hunger for this. People find themselves working two jobs, trying to make more money; chasing what they feel is their dream. Then they finally sit down one day and say, “What is this dream? Wait a minute! What I’m working harder for is a second home, a third DVD player, a third car...But that isn’t what I really want.” What people really want is to spend more time with their family, to spend more time painting or playing the flute or whatever it is that brings them joy. People are getting fed up with the orgy of consumerism, and they try to do less. My most loving mother had carefully explained that getting a good job is the way to make progress in life. Dad had been a Civil Servant and this is what my ambition should rightfully be. Looking back in the rear view mirror it is clear to see that generations of parents had instilled the same goals of "getting ahead" in their offspring. JOBS! JOBS! JOBS! Education gets you ahead in the consumers race! is the cry of the left-brain cement head.

Wheel and Whoa! Stop and think for a moment my Action Core friends. Come out of the house of bondage and lets go up to the Observation Deck of the MOTHERSHIP. On the Observation deck we can see that the Light Beings have everyone's vibe-phone number. Anyone can tune in when their inner turbulence has died away and the line is not always busy with left-side roof brain chatter. Anyone, that is, who has broken free of the dominance of invisible mandarins and is not enshrined in solid left-brain bureaucratic cement.

As the MOTHERSHIP starts pulling away from her moorings it causes a lot of turbulence down-under as the tidal wave of light hitting the earth shakes up the cocoon of the Cosmic Egg that we have been nurtured in. The cement starts cracking, light comes in through the cracks; the egg-shell becomes transparent. Then comes the qwiff-pop reaction. The WEIGHT of bureaucracy starts shifting as the magnetic tug overcomes the gravitational drag."

- Cosmic Cube, Circuit 8.6

wikipiphany

Happy epiphany everybody! Four explosions were heard, apparently percussion grenades set off by police.

The clash broke out after a line of riot police blocked the path of hundreds of protesters heading to a jail where demonstrators arrested in previous protests were being held. Police beat their shields with truncheons and advanced on the crowd.

The protesters began to disperse, yelling: "Fascists!" But police detained some 20 people and loaded them into large trucks.

At least two people were seen lying on the ground after the clash, apparently seriously hurt. An ambulance came to pick up the injured.

The main opposition candidate in the vote, Alexander Milinkevich, denied media reports that he himself was detained.

He told The Associated Press that his spokesman, Pavel Mazheika, was detained in a separate incident. Milinkevich went to a precinct house to attempt to secure his release.

"No, I have not been detained," he said. "I came to the (police precinct house) to help my press secretary, who was carrying equipment and was detained," he said.

However, Alexander Kozulin, an opposition leader who called on protesters to head to the jail after the rally, was beaten and detained during the clash, his spokeswoman, Nina Shidlovskaya said.

The violence came after an opposition rally drew thousands of Belarusians peacefully in a park to denounce President Alexander Lukashenko after a disputed election returned him to power.

Rows of black-clad police blocked the central October Square where opposition leaders had called for a rally at noon, pushing crowds back in a bid to end a week of unprecedented protests in the tightly controlled former Soviet republic. Demonstrators shouted "Shame!" and "Long live Belarus!"

Tensions mounted swiftly as police in full riot gear arrived by the busload to shove protesters back. The crowd at a major intersection near the square — where Lenin Street meets Independence Avenue — quickly swelled from a few hundred to some 3,000.

After gathering on the other side of the sprawling square with a crowd of about the same size, Milinkevich led supporters to a nearby park and the group swelled to as many as 5,000 people.

"The authorities can only confront the striving of the people for change with persecution and violence," Milinkevich told the crowd. Demonstrators held flowers and waved the red-and-white historic flag of the opposition.

"The people have come out today, they have come out in the face of truncheons, in the face of arrests. We are working against dictatorship," Milinkevich said. "The more the authorities conduct repression, the closer they bring themselves to their end." . . .

leave your fear behind

you are the revolution you've been waiting for

We look with the eyes of the ancestors

Before Mindscape there was Wilderness . They cannot run away; and if they could, they would still be destroyed,—chased and hunted down as long as fun or a dollar could be got out of their bark hides, branching horns, or magnificent bole backbones. Few that fell trees plant them; nor would planting avail much towards getting back anything like the noble primeval forests. During a man’s life only saplings can be grown, in the place of the old trees-tens of centuries old-that have been destroyed. It took more than three thousand years to make some of the trees in these Western woods,—trees that are still standing in perfect strength and beauty, waving and singing in the mighty forests of the Sierra. Through all the wonderful, eventful centuries since Christ’s time-and long before that- God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand straining, leveling tempests and floods; but he cannot save them from fools,—only Uncle Sam can do that.

- John Muir

Save our forests

President Bush's proposed 2007 budget includes a legislative request to allow the U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management to sell off land in national forests, grasslands and scenic areas . . . They sounded far enough away for it to be safe to go to the window. I did. I couldn’t see anything. Then it was not just a few gun shots—if that’s what they were. It sounded like a gun battle. It went on for some time.

It sounded like a shoot out at OK Corral but then again, maybe it was something else. When it stopped, I went back to sleep.

This morning there’s a front page story on the gun battle. Fifteen “bandidos” armed with “metralhadoras” (when I found the meaning in my pocket dictionary, I laughed in disbelief)—machine guns, invaded a condominium building in a nearby neighborhood, took a young girl hostage (she was returning from a party), disarmed the security cameras, and robbed the girl’s apartment. They clearly intended to rob other apartments but within a few minutes an army of federal police were on the scene. That’s when the “troca de tiros” (gun battle) began. (The bandits let the hostage go at that point and she and security guys from the building ran for their lives.)

The bandits fled. Police searched seven hours for them. Most got away but they killed one hiding in some shrubbery and killed another who had hidden himself for five hours in a ventilation tube. The newspaper published photos of the bloody corpses.

All the apartment and condominium buildings have sentry boxes, booths with tinted glass—they’re built into the architecture—and staffed 24 hours a day. There are locked fences surrounding the buildings that the sentries must open for residents. When pizza is ordered, the delivery man doesn’t get into the building. The sentry telephones the resident who comes down for it. (Once some bandits did gain access to an apartment building by posing as doctors.)

When I go to the dentist, the door between the office and the waiting room is kept locked. There’s a security camera in the waiting. Inside, the dentist can see on her screen who’s in the waiting room and what’s happening.

“Security” is a huge industry in a country with such social injustice and extreme maldistribution of wealth as Brazil. There are more people working in “security” than are in the Brazilian military.

My friend Ana keeps saying, as watch television or look at a magazine cover, that she knows the mother of that film star or the brother of that singer.

“Brazil is a small country,” she explained.

“No,” I said. “Brazil is actually quite a large country.”

She laughed. “The middle class is small.”

How small? I asked.

The middle class and the very wealthy together make up maybe 10 percent of the population. Another 10 percent scraps by. But a good 80 percent of the people live in abject, grinding poverty. The other day, as we were walking through a Bon Preco (the Brazilian WalMart), she pointed out a thermos on sale for less than $1 which people could buy on a ten month installment plan—that is, paying less than a dime a month.

But everyone has a television. All those in the slums can see what is available and know that they have absolutely no possibility of obtaining these things unless they take them by force. (The less time I was here, I was walking down a street one morning listening to my Walkman. A kid ripped the Walkman out of my ears and took off.)

Last weekend a German tourist was shot and killed on the beach at 11 a.m. when he resisted the theft of his camera. (Obviously this letter isn’t for Nona. Tell her I’m fine, which I am. I don’t have a camera and I never walk around with a Walkman.) I go to a beach where there are lots of chair and coconut water venders who keep an eye on things as it’s very bad for their business if tourists get shot.

Stunned by the crime here, I told Ana that with the increasing disparity between rich and poor in the U.S., this could be what’s in store for us in the U.S.

She nodded: “We are you tomorrow.”

Here’s how it is in Sao Paulo: The very rich no longer travel on the streets of the city. They fly around in helicopters. All the buildings have helicopter pads on their roofs to accommodate them. The merely rich travel around in armored cars. There are many companies specializing in their manufacture.

Millions of children live on the streets. They’re a tribe: “Crianzas da Rua.” Their parents can’t feed them or house them. Or the kids run away from violence. Squads of police go out and kill many of the kids. This has been often documented; it’s not really hid. There are many of these street children who, by 10 years of age, have already killed five or six people. They know they themselves do not have long to live.

When the police went on strike in Salvador last year, Ana said, the middle class stayed at home, behind their locked fences, terrified. Poor people looted stores. (Ana was disgusted. She keeps expecting and hoping the poor will launch a revolution. “They don’t want to be citizens,” she said, scornfully. “They want to be consumers.”) Terezhina, a friend here, was in a nearby shopping center, Shopping Barra, during the strike. A shopper heard the looters had gone through another shopping area and were on their way to Shopping Barra. “The riff raff are coming,” she said to Terezhina, alarmed, “and my chauffeur hasn’t arrived yet!”

With such inequality of wealth, the middle class can have all kinds of services from the poor at extremely low wages. Everyone in the middle class has a full-time maid. Ana’s maid, Teresa, cooks the main meal at mid-day and then makes a soup for the light evening meal. She washes our clothes and irons them. (I almost never iron my clothes.) Cleans the apartment and washes the dishes. Can you imagine how much of your time is freed up, how much easier your life is, when someone is taking care of all the domestic labor?

There are four men who work in this building. (All the buildings are named. I live in Edificio Christiana.) They are the guards, opening and locking doors and gates. They carry in packages and—when I arrived—suitcases. They wash all the cars in the garage regularly!

I can not tell you how weird it is to walk around the city and see every single car spotlessly clean. I mean, it is unbelievably weird.

Walking conditions around the city are horrible. Because the poor walk. The rich have cars, spotlessly clean. There’s little sidewalk space and often it’s taken up by parked cars or trash barrels so you’re forced to step into the street where cars whiz by at arrogant speeds. There’s a high rate of traffic deaths. (Believe me, I am super-vigilant when I walk.)

At crossings, cars have preference over pedestrians. It’s also so strange for me to see pedestrians stop humbly to let a car take precedence.

All of these details build in me a horror at how so many are living here and a great sense of foreboding, knowing what can come to the U.S. as more and more people hang on with their fingernails to the middle class they imagined they’d always belong to but find themselves slipping from and the gap between the have nots, the haves and—what George Bush calls his own base of support, “the “have mores,” widens.

A more cheerful letter next time. In the meantime, do demonstrate as much as you can. I must do more to resist the growing fascism in our country when I return.

Love, Gena

Our Fluid Universe

Love this image of the Sun's corona by Jerry Lodriguss.
my foot is healing up just fine. after spending time in zippolite i find it easy to stay out of the water. i interact with the sound of the ocean now. it submirges my consciousness day and night. it is the back ground for everything. in the moon light the waves take on a glow, as if the sea is smilling in a dark room. as the waves wind down to it smallest bubbles there is a sparkeling magic in it`s sound. a fuzzy tingling that inters the ears and permeates the consciousness. those smilling waves roll by crashing the shore over and over again. often i think of it as the pulse of the ocean or the heart beat of the sea. this thing is alive, it is organic and it is always communicating something weither i am lisning or not. it is always there whispering to me.

i am resting and relaxing at present, i am told that this is the only one of a few beaches that you can see the sun rise and set from the same beach. the sun seems to set in different places, i cannot explain that, but i am working on it. some one says it is because of the wobble of the earth, i don´t know about that. but i am in a place where i don´t have to know the time of day, the day of the week or month or the year, at least until my plane is due to return. that will not be for another three months. well talk to you later. oh yeah i hung out with the life guards, they are too cool...aa (bison)

The State of Affairs

must read:
peeking into darkened corriders

The End of the Antipode

If the Pyramids Then look right for several seconds and feel whatever you feel. Look left and do the same. Then look upward, still with your eyes closed, and feel whatever you feel. Then look downward. While looking in each direction with your eyes closed, do your best to be very sensitive, feeling from your heart area as you would while viewing an emotion-laden photograph or painting. What do you feel in your physical body, and especially what do you feel in your emotional “body,” or the domain where you feel emotions?

"While looking with closed eyes in each of the four directions, which direction feels best: left, right, up, or down? Honestly, I am interested in very, very little that appears in the time of the human domain, which is quite shallow and ever-changing. But I'm obviously interested enough to continue choosing it. And for as long as I am effortlessly aware of this choice as I am doing it, this moment-by-moment time-making motive of creating distinctions with my attention — in every moment I am open enough to feel this choice to find meaning in time, then in those moments my attention relaxes as love's knowingness and everything becomes obvious as love's spontaneous swell, making evident the deep heart-meaning of all happenings, instantly.

"Otherwise, I feel resistant and stuck, as if in a bad dream—forgotten to have been made by the choice to want something to happen in time."

- David Deida

This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine

"Spirituality is a mysterious thing––keep it that way. There were lots of people waiting in the room for her to arrive. When she did appear, she was wearing all white. Her assistant introduced her prior to her entrance, so when she came in, she didn't make any introductions or small talk. There was only singing, meditation, teaching, and a line of people waiting for her blessing.

Mirabai's teaching was very clear and concise, and she reduced everything to the simple truth of the matter of life. The meditation was good, for a while. Then something began to shift. The singing began to bother me - not uplift me. One of the musicians near me smelled intensely of perfumey incense. I got in line. My feet were cold, because the doors were open to the crisp autumn air and my shoes were outside.

Finally, I received her blessing. The energy in her touch was as powerful as her words. But I was choking on the energy in the room. I drove home in a hurry, stripped and took a shower to wash off the smell of the vampires.

work in your village

"What about the shift to hybrid engines and, ultimately, hydrogen?

There are some 220 million cars currently on the road in the U.S. alone. The problem with that concept, which so many people think is the way you end the energy war, is it will take 30 years to turn over the entire vehicle fleet. We don't have 15 or 20 years, much less 30.

We need to think on a grander scale. We have to find, for instance, far more energy-efficient methods of transporting products by rail and ship rather than trucks. We have to liberate the workforce from office-based jobs and let them work in their village, through the modern technology of emails and faxes and video conferencing. We have to address the distribution of food: Much of the food in supermarkets today comes from at least a continent or two away. We need to return to local farms. And we have to attack globalization: As energy prices soar, manufacturing things close to home will begin to make sense again."

- Grist

Picture yourself

Thanks Sig.

Google yourself

My astro reading from Rob Breszny And it's not because they didn't know there was a problem.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Pres. Bush has requested, and Congress has authorized, $60,000,000,000 of new funding for FEMA, a DHS (Homeland Security) agency. Here is a sample of FEMA's activities in New Orleans:

There have been many reports of FEMA blocking relief efforts. Globalstar reported that a truck carrying more than 1,000 satellite telephones was barred from the disaster area. Aaron Broussard, the President of Jefferson Parish, which neighbors New Orleans, criticized the governments response on the September 4, 2005 edition of NBC's Meet the Press. Broussard described how FEMA blocked water deliveries from Wal-Mart, blocked the shipment of fuel to his area, cut emergency communication lines and described how the local sheriff posted armed guards to protect the lines after they were reconnected.

"We had Wal-Mart deliver three trucks of water, trailer trucks of water. FEMA turned them back. They said we didn't need them. This was a week ago. FEMA--we had 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel on a Coast Guard vessel docked in my parish. The Coast Guard said, 'Come get the fuel right away.' When we got there with our trucks, they got a word. 'FEMA says don't give you the fuel.' Yesterday--yesterday--FEMA comes in and cuts all of our emergency communication lines. They cut them without notice."

- wikipedia

Meanwhile, inside the city . . .

What is remarkable is that on a downtown street in a major American city, a corpse can decompose for days, like carrion, and that is acceptable.

Welcome to New Orleans in the post-apocalypse, half baked and half deluged: pestilent, eerie, unnaturally quiet. . . .

Rush hour in downtown now means pickups carrying gun-carrying men in sunglasses, S.U.V.'s loaded with out-of-town reporters hungry for action, and the occasional tank. About the only ones commuting by bus are dull-eyed suspects shuffling two-by-two from the bus-and-train terminal, which is now a makeshift jail.

- Dan Barry, NY Times, Sept 8, 2005

They must have a reason, and that reason must be incomprehensible.

Another encounter

I'm in Boston town, in some restaurant
I got no idea what I want
Well, maybe I do but I'm just really not sure
Waitress comes over
Nobody in the place but me and her

It must be a holiday, there's nobody around
She studies me closely as I sit down
She got a pretty face and long white shiny legs
She says, "What'll it be?"
I say, "I don't know, you got any soft boiled eggs?"

She looks at me, Says "I'd bring you some
but we're out of 'm, you picked the wrong time to come"
Then she says, "I know you're an artist, draw a picture of me!"
I say, "I would if I could, but,
I don't do sketches from memory."

"Well", she says, "I'm right here in front of you, or haven't you looked?"
I say," all right, I know, but I don't have my drawing book!"
She gives me a napkin, she says, "you can do it on that"
I say, "yes I could but,
I don't know where my pencil is at!"

She pulls one out from behind her ear
She says "all right now, go ahead, draw me, I'm standing right here"
I make a few lines, and I show it for her to see
Well she takes a napkin and throws it back
And says "that don't look a thing like me!"

I said, "Oh, kind miss, it most certainly does"
She says, "you must be jokin.'" Jacob's well was still there.

Jesus came to that place, and his disciples went into the nearby city of Sychar to buy meat.

Weary from the journey, Jesus sat down by the well. A woman came along to draw from the well, and Jesus asked her for a drink.

This piqued her curiosity, because the Jews had no dealings with the Samaritans. She asked him, "Why would you, a Jew, ask for water from me, a woman of Samaria?"

Jesus replied, "If you knew the gift of God, and if you knew the one who asked you, you would have asked him for a drink of living water, and he would have given it to you."

"You have nothing to draw with," she said, "and this well is deep. Where will you get that 'living water'?

Do you claim to be greater than our father Jacob who drank from this well himself, and gave the water to his children and cattle?"

"Whoever drinks this water will thirst again. But if someone drinks the water I give her, she will never thirst, for a well will spring up within her that will last forever."

"Then give me this water, so I'll no longer be thirsty or need to come here to draw."

"Go and call your husband, and bring him here with you."

"I don't have a husband."

"Well, that's true; he's not your husband. But you have had five of them."

"I see. So you're a prophet. Tell me this then: Our fathers worshipped on this mountain. Do you say that we should worship in Jerusalem instead?"

"You don't even know what you worship here; at least in Jerusalem we know what we worship. But believe me, the hour is coming, and is here now, when you will no longer need to worship on this mountain or in Jerusalem. For God is Spirit, and is seeking those who worship in spirit and in truth."

"I know that the one who is called Christ is coming, and when he comes, he will tell us all things."

"I am that One."

Just then, his disciples returned, and the woman went away, leaving her waterpot behind. She told many people in the city what had happened, and they returned with her to see him.

Meanwhile, the disciples marvelled that he had been talking with this woman, but no one asked him why. Instead, they offered him some meat.

But he said to them, "I have meat to eat that you don't even know about."

And the disciples said to one another, "Did somebody bring him food already?"

Then Jesus said to them, "My meat is to do the will of the One that sent me, and to finish His work."

- John 4:5-34, retranslated from the King James version

Trying to remember

"While the human spirit cannot be entirely extinguished, it is highly susceptible to environmental factors. For instance, humanity is more easily manipulated than other species. Humanity will work incessantly for peanuts, as they say, or for an idea or goal that may not be in its own best interest.

Do you remember the story of Pinocchio? He very much wanted to become a real boy instead of a wooden toy. Humanity very much wants to become an enlightened species and not an automated puppet race. Pinocchio tried very hard to remember all the wonderful rewards that would be his if he could just remember and keep the promises he had made to himself and to his father, Gepetto. Humanity, individually and collectively is also trying very hard to recall the commitments it has made to itself and to the Divine Purpose, or Father/All That Is that guides it.

Pinocchio had help from a fairy and from a cricket. Humanity also receives assistance from the seen and the unseen, as well as from heaven and earth. Pinocchio was easily deceived. He followed those who had little or no reputation of which to speak, because the promises they made sounded almost too good to be true . . . and they were. The characters in the story could no more keep the promises they made than those who make promises to humanity today can.

Fairy tales are stories about imaginary beings or events that convey or contain a message. They are improbable invented accounts that are told to children, but see how easily they become real life examples? Pinocchio traveled long and far. He experienced hunger, disappointment, deceit, imprisonment, lack, cold, and a variety of other physical and emotional tortures. All the while he was trying to get back home, back to his father, back to the place where it all began. Humanity wants the same. It wants to become real, or self-realized, do you see?

Fairy Tales are sometimes read to children so that they will go to sleep and dream. The intention of these words is to wake you from the long sleep and the dream that has already replayed itself one too many times. This story and the dreamtime that accompanies it has nothing else to teach you and nowhere else to take you. There are many roads and many realities that can take you home now, but you must endeavor to mark this distance by your own choice and by the decisions and steps you now take. Assistance is still yours for the asking."

- Pepper Lewis

Jim Brewer

Back in the early 80's, I used to trek uptown with my college pals to hear Jim Brewer play at the No Exit Cafe. It was a little folkclub coffeehouse that drew some really fine performers out of the Chicago 'hoods. The musicians played for tips. Sitting in the No Exit, I felt like I was listening to music that was real, and important, participating in something that reminded us that we were humans, and that our stories mattered.

The name "No Exit" came from Sartre's one-act existentialist play. I think existentialism basically says, "this is it, savor the moment (or not)".

I wrote an earnest poem about the place for one of my English classes:

Apple Cider
Spearmint Tea
Sorry, we don't have any.
Mocha?
No
Coffee?
No
Exit

Here's a bit of one of Jim's songs, Long Ways From Home.

One of those college pals, Slick, gave me a copy of a JB recording, but it's all one track, 43 minutes long. oops!

Come back baby
Can't we talk it over,
Lord, one more time . . .

Religion

Can't find a church that works for you? type='text'>War games

"ism": a fundamental belief in some ideology

"terror": extreme fear

So, terrorism is intended to manifest extreme fear. The more people you can make afraid, and the more afraid you can make them, the better.

That would seem to be a likely reason for willfully killing, maiming, threatening and torturing civilians. It seems to me that an "honorable" war would be fought with different intentions.

So some questions to consider would be: Who are the people who are being made afraid, and who's willfully making them afraid? Vermont is another world, you know as soon as you cross the border that something has shifted.

If you're heading to Jado's birthday party, you'll want to turn left at the General Store. Head up the hill for four miles. Turn right on South Valley road. You'll see some hills and cows. After about a mile, you'll see some balloons tied to a tree. Follow them down another dirt road, named after the brook. Park anywhere you like - on the road, in the field, you can't get much further unless you brought your bike, or some sturdy shoes.

Bring some tasty pot luck item. And a cooler with ice if you want to keep your beverages cold. Every so often they run the generator to fill up the tank, so they can have running water in the kitchen sink. That's cause there's no electricity, but they do have a telephone line. If you want to use your cell, you might get a bar if you drive back to the main road and wave it around in the air. Bathroom's out back, past the firepit.

Last time I went to Jado's birthday party, he was two. Now he's four. He's aging exponentially! It must be all that fresh air. I wonder what it's like to live without all the constant bombardment of mechanical electrical fields.

The thing I'm noticing at this party is how different people's ways are of engaging with friends and strangers. Will parents talk to their kid's friends, or do they start with so many assumptions that there's not much left to talk about after the introductions? Why does my friend's new partner shy away from me? I want to know her, to find out all about her, to drink in her delightful presence, to sense the pleasure of my good friend's newfound love, but she acts like I don't exist. Why does Jado's mom act like she doesn't know me? The last few times I saw her we had a pleasant dinner together, she asked me to call her. Do they think their boyfriends will be jealous? What's that about? This man they love will punish them somehow for opening up to anyone but himself? Maybe it's fear of losing something that they hold more dearly than random friendship. Do they not trust me, or do they not trust themselves? Will I break their hearts in a simple conversation? Will I take them out behind the woodshed and wrestle them down?

Folks in Vermont keep their guitars close at hand. Even though there may not be much to talk about, dad's layin down some real fine Neil Young tracks over coffeehouse coworker's chords. The Israeli couscous is the potluck flava sensation. The Long Trail blueberry wheat beer tastes really good - I'm glad I didn't read the label. The unlabeled 22 oz bottles looked mysteriously alluring: new boyfriend works at the brewery in town, where they make some strange and powerful nectar. Dreadlock friend pulls a bag of Mother herb from his overalls.

I liked the neighbors. Their little cabin is nowhere to be seen. They're substitute teachers, so there's no work this summer. But they live simply. Entertainment is working in the garden or hiking up to the pond to watch the beavers and blue herons. She wasn't afraid to talk to me, she was all sweetness and smiles. He didn't seem jealous at all. They're moving to Montana soon, I'll probably never see them again.

Montana people didn't run for shelter when raindrops fell from the sky. Then a rainbow appeared over Jado's pile of presents. He got a new bike with some very cool spaceship blueish headlights and red tail lights. He also got a sword that does alot more for you than your cell phone when you wave it around in the air - it makes big bubbles.

I'm going' back to my house
But I'm not goin' now
It's too early to be leaving here, somehow
Let me bore you with this story
"How my lover let me down"
While I borrow seeds of sadness
From the ground.

- Neil Young

Could it be?

I think I'm falling in love, with Stella. I met her at a bar in Manhattan - she was smooth and bubbly and exotic. I liked her, but I really wasn't too interested. I thought she was out of reach. My friend Tim, the investment banker, picked up the tab.

Now it's over a year later, it's summertime, people are wearing less and less clothing, and who should I see at the Whole Foods Market, but Stella? We live over two hours north of the big city. Lot's of folks come up here when they feel like unwinding a bit. You can find a cool swimming hole that only you and your friends know about (or maybe some of their friends, and a few people with insiders guides, or the right connections, you know how it goes).

So I brought her home. We fired up the grill. Our house has a regal back porch with a comfy sofa for two. The house was built in the mid-1800's, and back then, it had a main street address, with a long drive leading up to the stone steps. The steps climb a small hill, with 3 terraces, and the porch is at the top. Billy, who used to live here until he moved to an airstream in Utah, said this place is forever lodged in his mind, like some kind of mayan temple. His girlfriend's name is Stella. They used to have my room, and Stella used to have my muffin job. It's a small world.

Well, it turns out that my housemate Rishi likes Stella too. It's alright. She's always liked girls, it's the ignorance and the politics she couldn't handle. So we share.

But Stella loves the big city. She likes to stay up late and party, and we go to bed pretty early up here in the hilltowns. So she comes and goes, but she's always welcome. Now she's here for the weekend. I have to work today, Saturday is the busiest day of the week at the market & deli. But I'm looking forward to this evening. We'll sit on the porch and watch the sun go down behind the hills. At dusk, the bats come along hunting for mosquitos, and when the sky gets too dark to see the bats, the fireflies begin their mating ritual. There are lots of stars in the sky on a clear night, until the moon comes out to shine much brighter than the rest.

By the way, you're welcome to come and visit us too.
We'll save some for you ;-)

stella's website

sometimes I don't speak right

but I still know what i'm talkin about . . .

why can't we be friends?
why can't we be friends?
why can't we be friends?
why can't we be friends?

I need a vacation

Today I was on my feet for over 8 hours, making muffins and scones, soups and salads, coffees and cream cheeses. Why? Because for the first time in over 8 months, somebody's paying me to do something.

I have to think about that last statement. Am I making that up? Well let's see. Lynda gave me gas money for driving her from NYC to NC. Peter gave me gas money for taking them to the airport. I think that's about it. If anyone let's me in, we're gonna burn some herbs and check out the tingly white glow." rev 3:20

Who translated that book? A committee of old uptight european white men, perhaps? I'm sure they're smart people with lots of language skills - and lots of theological opinions that have been honed through years of study. But what if those centuries of layers of head-speak have taken us further and further away from what really happened back then, and we've built a whole religion around our opinions?

You might be thinking that I was just burning some herb myself. Well I was burning a cigarette, and the smoke blew right into my sleeping neighbor's window. I had a sense that that would happen, but I came up with some good explainations in my head that begged to differ. "I'll hold it away, I'll blow it away, I'll wave it away." I retranslated the book. Sure enough, I heard him rumbling around in there fumbling with the shutters, trying to get his window closed.

I wanted to have my experience of coffee and cigarettes in the garden while typing on my wireless notebook. It always looks so cool when you see people computing in exotic places in the magazine photos. But I probably don't look too serene, because I'm squinting to see the screen. I think I'll just sit back and enjoy the tingly white glow.

reveal

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): There is a proverb from the American culture of the early 21st century that I'd like to run by you, Libra: "Never reveal all you know, confess everything you feel, show how much you care, or give all you have." According to my astrological analysis, this is the worst possible advice you could receive in order to thrive in the coming weeks. In fact, if it were up to me, you'd do just the opposite. I understand if you can't bring yourself to do that, especially if you're an American. Nonetheless, that's what would be good for you. - Rob Brezsny

Thanks Rob. You always manage to speak directly to me, and my housemate, and probably all your 30,000 newsletter subscribers, plus the multitudes who look forward to your weekly column in their favorite paper. Funny how that works.

I'm stalling . . .

So, yesterday I got the call. They offered me the job. I'm going to be baking muffins and warming up the bagels and filling the pumpsters with coffee for our little village. It seems like a noble cause.

It seems like good timing too, because I'll probably start on the day before (or the day after) I run out of money. This is the way Spirit operates in my life. Four+ years after I left my corporate job to seek a more meaningful existence, I'm baking muffins. That said, even though I've been running on fumes financially for a long time now, I'm living well. That's how the Universe operates. We get what we expect, what we envision, what we allow ourselves to receive. I haven't quite figured out how to raise the bar yet, but I'm working on it.

It is only yourself

If you are now feeling distressed by that last post, consider this:
it is not the spoon that bends.

Goodbye cruel world!

For those of you who haven't been paying attention, here's some trippy shit:
Operation Terra

What faith you are

I don't actually write much on my blogs, so this is a bit daunting, like dipping my foot in the water for the first time.

And, who has time for all this blogging? And how many times do I have to use the word "blog"?

Anyway, for me, the question is not what faith do you subscribe to, but what faith "you are". I met someone in town who went to the same college I did, where you had to subscribe to a certain set of christian beliefs and values just to get in. Then if you got caught being bad, you could get kicked out. She told me that she used to go into the new gym that was still under construction, to smoke some sacrament (herb, you know, weed) in the big empty space when no one else was around. She never got caught.

Now Janice is a recovering "belief slut" (her words), and an artist who makes collages of lips and gets involved in community projects.

The nice thing about the "faith you are" is that no one can kick you out but yourself. And I think that we all have to do it to get into this world and join a family and a society.

So, to answer simply, I was a christian, now I'm just exploring reality. For that story, please see my other blogs ;-)

One blog to the next

a long long time ago,
i had another blog . . .

whimsical magic
